Roles of NGAL and MMP-9 in the tumor microenvironment and sensitivity to targeted therapy.

Various, diverse molecules contribute to the tumor microenvironment and influence invasion and metastasis. In this review, the roles of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in the tumor microenvironment and sensitivity to therapy will be discussed. The lipocalin family of proteins has many important functions. For example when NGAL forms a complex with MMP-9 it increases its stability which is important in cancer metastasis. Small hydrophobic molecules are bound by NGAL which can alter their entry into and efflux from cells. Iron transport and storage are also influenced by NGAL activity. Abstract Objective To compare clinical features and treatments of patients with systemic JIA (sIJA) and adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSD). Methods The clinical charts of consecutive patients with sJIA by International League of Association of Rheumatology criteria or AOSD by Yamaguchi criteria were reviewed. Clinical staging and serum cytokines in bipolar patients during euthymia

Aims: Changes in serum cytokines and altered neutrophin concentration have been associated with bipolar disorder (BD). Our aim here was to analyze peripheral blood biomarkers according to the clinical stages of BD. Method: Euthymic BD-I patients were grouped according to their level of functioning in early-stage (n = 25) and late-stage (n = 23), and compared to healthy siblings (n = 23) and genetically unrelated healthy controls (n = 21). Clinical evaluation of pancreatitis-associated protein as a serum marker of hepatocellular carcinoma: Comparison with α-fetoprotein

This study evaluated the significance of serum pancreatitis-associated protein (PAP) assay, as a marker of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), in comparison and combined with α-fetoprotein (AFP) assay. Sixty-five patients with HCC, 59 with liver cirrhosis (LC) and 68 asymptomatic controls (C) were studied. PAP and AFP values significantly increased from C to LC and HCC group (p < 0.0001). The area under receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve for the two markers was not statistically different. Acute Phase Proteins Are Baseline Predictors of Tuberculosis Treatment Failure

Systemic inflammation is a characteristic feature of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). Whether systemic inflammation is associated with treatment failure in PTB is not known. Participants, who were newly diagnosed, sputum smear and culture positive individuals with drug-sensitive PTB, were treated with standard anti-tuberculosis treatment and classified as having treatment failure or microbiological cure. The plasma levels of acute phase proteins were assessed at baseline (pre-treatment). Pancreatitis-associated protein in patients with celiac disease: Serum levels and immunocytochemical localization in small intestine

Since PAP is a stress protein expressed in human pancreas during pancreatitis but also constitutively synthesized in the small intestine, we looked whether its expression would be altered in patients with celiac disease. Immunological and immunogenetic markers in sporadic Alzheimer’s disease

Background: Common polymorphisms of genes controlling inflammation-modulating cytokines and acute-phase proteins which play important roles in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer''s disease (AD) have been shown to be associated with AD. Aims: The immunological and immunogenetic markers potentially useful for the AD risk evaluation and diagnosis are briefly reviewed. Conclusion: The state-of-the-art of immunological and immunogenetic markers of AD indicates that new tools and strategies are necessary to identify gene products useful as diagnostic tools.
